Use of Mechanical Shock to Depassivate Cells

The depassivation methods presented above are the only proven methods to depassivate Li/SOCl2 cells. It is recognized that the application of a mechanical shock to a Li/SOCl2 cell will increase the closed circuit potential observed during initial loading; however, the mechanism involved is largely unknown and it is possible that this action may be harmful to the cells. Until further testing can uncover the role mechanical shock plays in the disruption of the passivation layer, we do not recommend the use of mechanical shock as a depassivation method.
