There are two factors that influence the growth of the passivation layer in a Li/SOCl2 cell.
- Length of open circuit (no load) storage
- Storage Temperature
In general, the rate of chemical reactions increases by a factor of two for each increase in temperature of 10°C. Testing has shown that the voltage delay characteristics for cells stored at four weeks at 50° (122°F) are approximately equivalent to those stored for 32 weeks at 20°C (68°F). Therefore, storage of Li/SOCl2 cells for extended periods of time at elevated temperatures exacerbates the passivation problem.
